Second Best Syndrome

Being second best isn’t a bad thing –
I should know –
I’ve been second best at a lot of things in life –
Yet – I’ve never really been that disappointed
About it until I was second best in her eyes

Being second best isn’t a bad thing –
As long as it’s not second best in love –
Second best in love is equivalent to second rate –
Second best in love is equivalent to failure –
Second best in love carries no trophy nor prize –
Unless you somehow count a broken heart one

Notes to this poem…

I think this poem is pretty self-explanatory, enough that I don’t want to write much about it, at least. The worst of it is that, more than anything else, I have found myself second best in love.

I see I began this poem on Valentine’s Day in 1995, on the same day I had completed some other beautiful love poems. I don’t recall anything memorable for Feb 14 1995, one way or the other, so it was not about a situation that happened. However, all the poetry work with dates associated to that day only meant I spent a lot of it alone, and if my heart weren’t broken that day, it probably already was. Being around so many people as while at university undergrad and not being with someone on Valentine’s Day not by choice is just awful to an extraverted type like me.
