Big Lift Ferry Poem F003

The moon is rising –
The tide is rising –
Like it’s trying to keep up

Notes to this poem…

Another ferry ride home from tennis tonight, and another poem, haiku specifically.

Tonight was the night after the total lunar eclipse of the blood moon and super moon of 2015 (Sep 27 2015). The moon was bright in the sky and almost full, still large from being closer to the Earth than normal.

The super moon had triggered warnings of high tides, of which we have the highest here in Nova Scotia, where I live, on the Bay of Fundy side. I’m not there in Halifax, but it was clear the tide was high from where it reached on the waterfront infrastructure, and it was still rising. As a result, I put together the two things I saw most clearly while on the ferry to get this haiku, realizing both were going up and metaphorically in the same direction. It seemed like a chase to me and that was that!

The F-series poems are part of a collection composed on my ferry rides across Halifax Harbour when the buses aren’t crossing the MacDonald bridge due to the Big Lift bridge redecking. This should keep happening until at least December 2016.
