Notes to this poem…
The name Tuyen mentioned is read tweeng. She really knows how to navigate Viet Nam to bargain for everything. She does it religiously, too, appropriately described as such only because it were only comparable to the way she talks about Buddhism and the wisdom of the Buddha.
The most memorable memory I have of Aunt Tuyen is not this, though. It’s her tragic story of having to split time between her two children, one in the United States and a younger one in Viet Nam who has never been abroad and has only heard stories, seen pictures and videos and such, over the years. That’s too complicated to tell in a haiku, but is told in haiku of others.
