Notes to this poem…

Today, I went to see a friend in downtown Dartmouth in the morning. I took the ferry when I could have taken the bus across the bridge just to be able to write more Big Lift Ferry poems. 🙂

I don’t usually get out at 8 AM other than to go to work, so this was a bit of a rare trip. Given it was like 8 degrees Celcius outside and sunny, absolutely gorgeous for December, I did not hesitate to go on the upper deck of the ferry for the trip. When I got up there, I had this haiku composed and was ready to say it.

The new routine reference in the haiku is something I’ve been changing this past week. The story began three months back when my building rewired the tenants’ cable. We now no longer had a choice of “skinny” cable, as it’s known, with just a dozen or two channels. Now, packages came with like 100 or more channels, and we were going to have to pay about the same rate per channel! We had a three month intro offer to try to suck us in and get us addicted, but I made an executive decision to opt out despite being able to afford it and living without TV for the first time in many decades as a result. I was going to have to be open-minded to new things, ways to compensate for my contact with the world, and such.

Less than a week in, I am not only embracing the cable change well, I’m using it as a catalyst to procrastinate less on all kinds of things I had waiting to be done. By chance, someone I met at work had one of those “Easy” buttons from Staples that she didn’t want, so I’m tallying my tasks high fiving or tenning that button to hear “That was easy!”. I do that when I get something done, even if it weren’t easy. It’s just good psychology. 🙂

That whole new level of motivation, and some tasks within, are part of my new routine. More later as more things get done and I write poems about them.

The F-series poems are part of a collection composed on my ferry rides across Halifax Harbour when the buses aren’t crossing the MacDonald bridge due to the Big Lift bridge redecking. This should keep happening until at least December 2016.
