What if ev’ry time
You learned how we harm plants and
Animals for food –
You imagined aliens
Doing that to you for food?

Notes to this poem…

Have you ever seen any documentaries or movies about how we get our food on an industrial scale? Or seen it in real life either as a farmer or someone who has been exposed to it? It’s generally quite gruesome! Harming and killing plants and animals is an unfortunate part of getting food for any creature. And yes, plants are included. Don’t kid yourselves they’re not sentient, can’t feel and such. We just can’t detect it as well with our senses. However, some of the things we do as humans to get food is far beyond anything any creature does in the plant and animal kingdoms, starting with cooking as plants and animals don’t cook. This is especially true when it comes to food produced on an industrial scale. Look up how farms treat chickens and cattle for meat, or what they have to do to cows to get us the milk so many of us consume.

Having seen some of how we produce food on an industrial scale, I have a good, albeit hardly complete, idea of how brutal and gruesome it all is. It certainly makes an impact, sure. However, I then thought how could it be even more impacting? That was when this idea came to mind. What if we were to substitute the animals, and plants, too, with ourselves? So then who would do that to us? Well, science-fiction has all kinds of films where aliens cull us for food. They could be in our place. The sad thing is, science-fiction has nothing that could compare to the brutality we exhibit to plants and animals!

You think about that concept to swap us in for the plants and animals, and have some aliens do what we do to them, the next time you see how food is produced on an industrial scale. This goes from the catching of fish with nets and hooks, to chopping of plants, impregnating cows all the time to get them to lactate for milk till they drop, to the final kill for food. It would make the most horrifying horror flicks you’d have ever seen!

Now, some of you might question how this concept would work with plants? We don’t move slowly like plants. Well, what if the aliens were like energy beings that could move fast as light and yet live almost for eternity as an energy source? We’d be terribly slow, almost inanimate, compared to them. Surely you don’t think we could be the fastest things living in the universe, do you?

Anyway, just think about the concept. Hope I didn’t ruin your next meal or anything. 🙂

The S-series poems were composed while I was out skating on the Halifax Emera Skating Oval, to squeeze in writing time in a life that is always getting busier.
