Skating Poem S011

A leaf or bullet –
Traveling against the wind –
Why can’t I be both –
Sprint skating against the wind –
At a hundred and eight pounds?

Notes to this poem…

Posted a day date.

It was very windy out tonight as I did a sprint skating workout on the Oval. In one direction, you could just stand there and be blown down the straightaway, reaching a pretty good speed. Going the other way, though, was a struggle. As a result, I made my workout a series of sprints against the wind, recovering when my back was to the wind.

At 108 pounds, it’s not hard to imagine being blown around like a leaf in that gale. However, when I turned it on and gunned it, tucking myself into a crouch to minimize profile surface area to cut through that wind, I felt like a bullet. Not certain which I felt more like, I wrote a poem asking why can’t I feel like both, as rather different as the two might be? Plus, I also liked the image of a leaf being able to travel against the wind. 🙂

The S-series poems were composed while I was out skating on the Halifax Emera Skating Oval, to squeeze in writing time in a life that is always getting busier.
