Big Lift Ferry Poem F072

Person by person –
I will tell the world about
The word mångata –
Swedish for road to the moon
It is the road least traveled

Notes to this poem…

Continuing the story from Big Lift Ferry Poem F71, after I told Greg and Ryan about the word mångata, I thought about how many people I have told about the word. I swear, I will be telling people about the word for the rest of my life. And from that thought came this tanka!

As for the road least traveled reference, it’s in part inspired by Robert Frost “path less traveled” phrase in The Road Not Taken. However, being a road on water that theoretically never gets you to the moon, it’s probably the road least traveled where there is a “road”, rather than just some path someone chose to walk.

The F-series poems are part of a collection composed on my ferry rides across Halifax Harbour when the buses aren’t crossing the MacDonald bridge due to the Big Lift bridge redecking. This should keep happening until at least December 2016.
