Running Poem R021

Both mind and body
Resisted running today –
But to no avail –
My heart and soul made them run –
And run an extra mile, too!

Notes to this poem…

My experience in running knows that if I just get myself out there, I’ll eventually be glad I did. That’s even if it’s a miserable run cause there are benefits later as well, like endorphins. Yet, it’s really hard to get myself out on some days like any runner knows. Happens to all of us!

On my run today, I stopped into the St Mary’s University track to run a “conversational mile”. I conducted a conversation with myself where I spoke for half of it and thought the other half. I actually spoke more in the conversation, talking about my glory days ten years ago this weekend when I ran the race of my life, winning Leg 7 of the Cabot Trail Relay in a thrilling comeback victory near the finish line. It was more like an interview where my head asked the questions and my voice told the story in short bits. 🙂

During this conversation, I ran a pace I typically ran at. I ran in Lane 3 to get the extra 9 metres in a mile after 4 track loops (1609 m versus 1600 m in Lane 1). It was an almost perfectly paced mile that came to 7:14. I was very happy with that for not having trained much in running of late! 🙂

The R-series poems were composed while I was out running, in an effort to find time for writing in a life that is always getting busier.
