Hope I won’t have to
Give lots of bling when I die –
To be remembered –
Fondly and by many in
Just some small place in the world

Notes to this poem…
I was in a new university building today where it seemed everything they got was courtesy of somebody’s donation. As a result, there were plaques, signs and other notices telling you about who all these dead rich people were who gave money. It wasn’t an academic, or even less a professional, building. It was a memorial to rich dead folks who gave money to be remembered in some tiny place in the world, for probably a few decades at best, before it gets torn down and replaced.
Most people want to be remembered when they die. Paying lots of money for that little of a tribute doesn’t meet my standards, I’m afraid. I’m aspiring to die fondly famous the world over for my positive contributions to humanity! 🙂
Or die trying but not giving money like that to be remembered! I’ll just give it anonymously.
I never read much of any of those signs, plaques, etc. And certainly don’t remember any names. Just noticed. I hope these people got better value for their money from others in the building.
The poems titled Tanka, followed by a number, are tanka composed while I was not engaged in some activity during which I frequently composed poetry. That is why these are called the Inactive Tanka collection.
