Tanka T098

My hindsight in life –
Leads to new insights in life –
Which I then use to –
Edit my mental memoir –
Each time I reflect on life

Notes to this poem…

Whenever I reflect on anything in my life, I always get new insights from having thought about it more, and often, with more information as time passed. This doesn’t always lead to a better understanding of things in a satisfactory sense, just a better understanding of things. It’s sometimes more complicated than I once thought, but I’d understand that better upon reflection.

That understanding then revises how I understood whatever it was in my life that if I had written a memoir about it earlier, I’d then be revising it. Memoir writing, written, or not, we all have a memoir draft via our memories. In that sense, I consider myself to have a mental memoir. A better understanding of anything upon reflection is then just a revision of that mental memoir.

The poems titled Tanka, followed by a number, are tanka composed while I was not engaged in some activity during which I frequently composed poetry. That is why these are called the Inactive Tanka collection.
