Notes to this poem…

While I prefer St. Matthew’s Passion to St. John’s Passion by Bach (see Tanka 104), I listened to St. John’s Passion on the ferry ride home tonight.

In a nice breeze in the middle of the large harbour with big sky overhead and this roaring in my ears, the ride became epic. It’s the first time I listened to sacred choral music on the ferry ride, but it won’t be the last time. I usually listen to sacred choral music when I need to concentrate, not let my mind run free like when looking for poetic ideas.

The F-series poems are part of a collection composed on my ferry rides across Halifax Harbour when the buses aren’t crossing the MacDonald bridge due to the Big Lift bridge redecking. This should keep happening until at least December 2016.
