Tanka T111

I killed him on sight –
Cause had I shown him mercy –
He would have killed me –
Being my blood enemy
In this war over decades

Notes to this poem…

A scene from a dream last night where I was fighting in the Viet Nam War, something I never did. Going house to house, I came face to face with one of the enemy. I shot and killed him, and had no doubts I did the right thing for the reason mentioned. Not going to pretend it was wrong, or that I did differently cause I was more noble or anything. That’s just how it is in war.

You can believe otherwise at your own peril but don’t talk it unless you’ve done it to prove yourself cause I’d neither believe you to be right, nor that you’re that noble.

The T-series poems are tanka composed while I was not engaged in some activity during which I frequently composed poetry. That is why these are called the Inactive Tanka collection.
