I’ve decided –
To stop trying
To decide –
What I want to be
When I grow up –
And just not grow up –
To be young at heart –
Without the immature part

Notes to this poem…
Being young at heart and immaturity are almost always mutually exclusive, if not always, in my opinion. The difference is potential for negative consequences to others, first and foremost, and then yourself. If you were going to ignore potential for negative consequences to others by justifying it as being “young at heart”, then that’s immaturity. As for potential consequences to yourself, like risking your life, you do that if you want, even if there would be consequences to others who care about you. You’d lost far more in losing your life than some emotional toll your death would cause them.
The F-series poems are part of a collection composed on my ferry rides across Halifax Harbour when the buses aren’t crossing the MacDonald bridge due to the Big Lift bridge redecking. This should keep happening until at least December 2016.
