It’s good to have enemies –
For stepping stones in

Notes to this poem…
Our competitive nature as a species means it’s hard to get to the top without having to step on someone, metaphorically. That doesn’t have to be someone who doesn’t deserve to be stepped on, like from malicious intent. It’s just that competition isn’t always a track race in separate lanes, but sometimes like a contact sport. But if you have to step on someone, better to step on your enemies rather than friends, or even potential friends who are now our adversaries who may naturally help us to higher rates based on how tough they make things for us.
The F-series poems are part of a collection composed on my ferry rides across Halifax Harbour when the buses aren’t crossing the MacDonald bridge due to the Big Lift bridge redecking. This should keep happening until at least December 2016.
